A mock drill provides a detailed guide on responding to emergencies, helping participants understand the rescue process while identifying potential mistakes and hazards. Incorporating mock drills into the school curriculum is crucial for raising awareness and preparing students for crises. These drills allow participants to evaluate the effectiveness of the organization’s emergency protocols and enhance their own life skills.

To ensure the safety and readiness of students and staff in the event of a real fire emergency, New Indian School (NIS) held a fire drill on September 19. The exercise effectively assessed the school’s preparedness for such emergencies. The principal, Ms. Anita Sadanand, briefed staff and students the day before the mock drill on the procedures to follow during an emergency evacuation. To prevent a situation akin to a stampede and minimize casualties, students were taught to be vigilant, prompt, and responsible. They also learned to follow instructions, remain calm, and avoid panic, as well as the designated evacuation routes. The goal was clear: evacuate within three minutes.

On the designated date, the fire alarm was sounded to begin the drill at 8:45 a.m. without prior notification. Staff members and students quickly made their way to the assembly site using their assigned escape routes. As planned, the entire school arrived at the assembly spot in exactly three minutes.

When the Student Council members were trained to use fire extinguishers, they found the process exhilarating. The NIS mock fire drill was a valuable exercise that achieved its objectives. It not only tested the school’s emergency protocols but also fostered a culture of readiness and safety. The principal commended the staff for completing the process without needing external assistance from the General Directorate of Civil Defense.
