New era in the war on drugs; strict law to protect Kuwait from deadly scourge
The new anti-drug law has been finalized, and I signed it yesterday. It will be strict and deterrent. We are working with all our capabilities across all sectors -- Sheikh Fahd

The First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Sheikh Fahd Al-Yousef Al-Sabah, said the MOI will continue its relentless battle against drugs with full determination and strength, under the guidance and unwavering support of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Mishaal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.
In a statement to Al-Akhbar Channel during his visit to the national awareness campaign ‘We protect you against drugs,’ held at The Avenues Mall and organized by the ministries of Interior and Health in cooperation with the Kuwait University, Sheikh Fahd stressed that the State’s fight against narcotics is a top national priority.
He revealed that the Cabinet, during its weekly meeting, has approved a draft decree-law on combating drugs and psychotropic substances and regulating their use and trade. The draft law has been submitted to His Highness the Amir for approval.
“The new anti-drug law has been finalized, and I signed it yesterday. It will be strict and deterrent. We are working with all our capabilities across all sectors,” Sheikh Fahd declared.
He explained that with the continuous support of His Highness the Amir, the Ministry has already achieved remarkable success, intercepting nearly 90 percent of narcotics attempting to enter the country.
The forthcoming law, he added, is designed to tighten penalties and eliminate any leniency previously observed in judicial rulings, ensuring that both traffickers and users face decisive justice.
“This law will correct the course and serve as a strong deterrent to anyone who dares to endanger our society,” he emphasized.
Sheikh Fahd further revealed that he had directed the General Department of Security Relations and Media to coordinate with the Ministry of Information in launching a nationwide awareness campaign ahead of the implementation of the law. The campaign will air before news bulletins to educate citizens and residents about the new provisions and penalties under the law.
On the regional front, Sheikh Fahd underlined that drug trafficking remains an ongoing threat targeting the Gulf countries, whether through manufacturing or cultivation.
However, he noted that GCC states remain united, sharing intelligence and working together to curb this menace through coordinated efforts and mutual vigilance.
The Interior Minister also praised the Kuwait Lawyers Association and all organizers of the ‘We protect you against drugs’ campaign for their vital role in raising awareness, stressing that such initiatives are vital in safeguarding Kuwait’s youth and future generations.
He expressed hope that the Bar Association would support the Ministry of Interior by helping to interpret and clarify the provisions of the new law to ensure effective enforcement and public understanding.
“Our message is clear — Kuwait will show no tolerance toward drugs or those who spread them. Protecting our society is a shared responsibility,” Sheikh Fahd concluded.
