US Vice President JD Vance said that negotiations with Iran are making “good progress,” while stressing that the United States remains fully prepared for a military response if diplomacy fails.
Speaking at a White House briefing, Vance said Washington is “locked and loaded,” indicating that military operations could resume if no agreement is reached. However, he emphasized that the US does not want a prolonged conflict and described the situation as far from a “forever war.”
His remarks came a day after US President Donald Trump revealed he had halted a planned military strike on Iran at the request of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, highlighting regional diplomatic efforts to prevent escalation.
Vance said discussions with Iran are continuing constructively, noting that “a lot of good progress is being made,” but added that the outcome remains uncertain, with either a deal or renewed conflict possible.
Trump separately told reporters he was close to authorizing renewed strikes on Iran, warning that military action could still proceed within days if negotiations collapse.
The United States has demanded that Iran end its nuclear enrichment program and ease tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, while Iran is seeking an end to hostilities and compensation for damages linked to the conflict.
Despite signs of diplomatic engagement, both sides continue to signal readiness for escalation, leaving the outcome of the talks uncertain.
