NATO regional center launches advanced maritime security training for Gulf states

The NATO Regional Centre and the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative have launched a specialized training course titled “Joint Standardized Training in Contemporary Maritime Interdiction Operations”, which began on Sunday with the participation of 22 trainees from Gulf Cooperation Council countries.

Advisor to the NATO Regional Centre and the Initiative, Emad Al-Kandari, stated that the five-day program is being delivered by a Greek expert team from NATO’s Maritime Interdiction Operations Directorate.

The course is led by Rear Admiral Pericles Pepis, Commander of the NATO Maritime Security Operations Training Centre (NMIOTC), reports Alo-Rai.

Al-Kandari explained that this is the second edition of the course, reorganized due to its significance and its contribution to developing participants’ skills in maritime security, including counterterrorism, cybersecurity, protection of maritime infrastructure, and safeguarding shipping routes.

He noted that such programs align with efforts to strengthen cooperation between NATO and the member states of the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative, adding that the Center will launch its next work plan for 2026.

For his part, Rear Admiral Pepis emphasized that ongoing collaboration with the Regional Centre enhances coordination between NATO member states and Initiative partners.

He commended the Centre’s role in bringing perspectives closer together and facilitating the exchange of expertise in maritime navigation protection. He expressed hope that this cooperation would continue for the benefit of all participants and stakeholders.
