National Guard reassures public on radiation, chemical safety; no threat detected

Lieutenant Colonel Khaled Al-Lami, Operations Officer at the Sheikh Salem Al-Ali Center for Chemical Defense and Radiation Monitoring in the National Guard, affirmed that the radiological and chemical conditions in Kuwait remain normal, with no unusual increases detected.

In an interview with Al-Akhbar TV, Lt. Col. Al-Lami stated, “Through our continuous monitoring of radiation and chemical levels across Kuwait, we wish to reassure all citizens and residents that the situation is completely normal. There has been no rise in levels that would cause concern.”

He outlined the center’s capabilities, emphasizing that the National Guard operates a state-of-the-art monitoring system, which includes:

  • 29 land-based stations located across border areas, densely populated zones, and Kuwait’s islands.
  • 15 marine monitoring stations distributed throughout Kuwait’s territorial waters.

“These marine stations are highly advanced in detecting radiation and chemical substances in both water and air,” he explained. “This system positions the National Guard as the primary early warning body in the nation’s defense against weapons of mass destruction (WMDs). We share this critical data with relevant state entities through established communication channels.”

Lt. Col. Al-Lami emphasized that radiation and chemical monitoring has been conducted nonstop since 2015, noting that “our specialized teams work around the clock, and our monitoring efforts are part of our routine national security operations, not solely a response to current regional tensions.”

He also highlighted the center’s close coordination with other government agencies, facilitated by the Weapons of Mass Destruction Defense Cell housed within the center.

This cell includes specialized National Guard units and representatives from relevant ministries, ensuring efficient information sharing and unified response strategies to safeguard the health and safety of the public.
