MOI urges citizens, residents to secure home cameras

The Kuwait Ministry of Interior has urged residents who use home surveillance cameras to strictly follow cybersecurity guidelines and change the default passwords of their devices.

In a telephone interview with Al-Akhbar TV, Lieutenant Colonel Saud Al-Wazzan, spokesperson for the Cybercrime Department, stressed the importance of adhering to the instructions issued by relevant authorities, particularly the need to update passwords for home security cameras.

Al-Wazzan explained that the ministry issued the warning after noticing that some cameras were still operating with old or default passwords, making them vulnerable to unauthorized access that could threaten both personal privacy and national security, reports Al-Rai daily.

He noted that the country is currently in a heightened security situation, and unsecured cameras could potentially be exploited during cyberattacks or by hostile entities to monitor sensitive locations.

However, he confirmed that no hacking attempts have been detected so far, adding that authorities remain on high alert.

Al-Wazzan also said that users who install surveillance cameras through licensed providers are informed about the need to change the password, and the responsibility ultimately lies with the user to update it.

He added that the ministry is coordinating with relevant authorities to monitor developments and raise public awareness, noting a decline in incidents of filming and sharing sensitive information.

He stressed that authorities will not only continue awareness campaigns but will also take legal action against violators of the law.
