MOH issues advice to avoid heat strokes

The Ministry of Health (MOH) called for avoiding outdoor movement during peak heat hours, from 11 am to 4 pm to avoid extreme temperatures, heat strokes, and related health problems.

The Director of the Department of Health Promotion Dr. Abeer Al-Bahwa spoke at the National Committee to address the effects of climate change and environmental disasters, during the awareness campaign “Climate change… enhance your health”, at the Promenade complex. She said, “There are some practices that everyone must maintain in times of extreme heat, including self-hydration, avoiding excessive physical activity outdoors, wearing loose and light-colored clothes, staying in the shade, wearing hats and sunglasses, and showering often.”

She added that the campaign focused on raising awareness of the complications of high temperatures, and ways to combat heat strokes. Climate change has resulted in long-term shifts in temperature and rainfall patterns, in addition human activities such as burning fossil fuels and deforestation are primarily responsible for the rapid changes observed in recent decades.

The Director explained that severe symptoms require immediate medical attention, including confusion, non-response, seizures, coma, high body temperature for more than two hours, fainting, non-urination for more than 8 hours or the release of dark urine and rapid heartbeat and breathing.
