Modi to visit Kuwait over the weekend, 1st by an Indian PM to Kuwait in 43 years
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to arrive in Kuwait on an official visit on Saturday, 21 December. During his historic visit—the first such trip to Kuwait by an Indian prime minister in over 40 years—the Indian premier is expected to hold high-level talks with Kuwaiti leadership on further consolidating and expanding the age-old friendly relations between Kuwait and India.
Kuwait Foreign Minister Abdullah Ali Al-Yahya had visited New Delhi earlier this month and met with the Indian premier during which he extended an official invitation to visit Kuwait. The Indian government has in recent years prioritized its relations with the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. The Indian premier’s visit to Kuwait gains added significance considering that Kuwait currently holds the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) presidency.
Earlier in September, the Indian prime minister had met with His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meeting in New York, and expressed happiness at the growing momentum in bilateral relations between India and Kuwait. The two leaders has also discussed the security situation in the Middle East and called for the early return of peace and stability to the region, and the delivery of immediate humanitarian support.
