Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), one of India’s most ambitious infrastructure projects.
The airport, developed at a cost of ₹19,650 crore, is set to begin commercial operations at Terminal 1 in December.
From the first day of service, NMIA will handle both domestic and international flights, with airlines expected to operate 50–60 flights, including arrivals and departures, on the launch day.
Ahead of the operational launch, the airport will go live online, with airline websites and travel portals adding an ‘NMI’ booking option.
Meanwhile, the existing Mumbai airport will continue to operate under its IATA code ‘BOM’.
The state-of-the-art facility is being hailed as a landmark in India’s aviation and infrastructure development, designed to ease air traffic congestion and serve as a key gateway to western India.
