Ministry outlines three-point plan to prevent power outages during ‘heatwave’ season
Despite soaring temperatures, MEW said has no plans for scheduled power outages as Doha East power plant becomes fully operational after emergency repair

The Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy is working at full speed to complete its annual maintenance program for the country’s power and water production facilities in preparation for the high-demand summer season.
Informed sources told Al-Rai that all units at the Doha East Power Plant are now back in service, after being taken offline last summer due to an emergency malfunction.
The Ministry expects to complete maintenance on all remaining units by the end of this week—except for two, which will rejoin the grid later.
Despite soaring temperatures, the Ministry announced that it currently has no plans for scheduled power outages. However, officials are actively developing a strategy to manage electricity consumption during peak summer months. The plan includes three core proposals aimed at avoiding load strain and ensuring uninterrupted service.
Key Proposals to Cut Peak Consumption
According to the sources, the Ministry has submitted proposals to the Civil Service Bureau that include:
Delaying the Start of Evening Shifts in government entities to avoid overlapping with peak electricity usage hours, typically from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Suspending the Flexible Work Schedule during the summer to reduce energy loads from partially occupied government buildings.
Ending the Academic Year Immediately After Results are released for all school levels—an initiative that would significantly reduce traffic and electricity demand caused by educational institutions.
The sources clarified that these proposals are currently under review and may require Cabinet approval before implementation, stressing that regulating the operation times of government offices is essential, particularly since it is inefficient to keep buildings fully air-conditioned and lit when only a few employees are present.
The Ministry aims to apply these measures to avoid the need for scheduled outages and maintain a stable power supply throughout the hot season.
