. . . as dozens of families rush to seek treatment under Kuwait’s new drug law

  • Officials emphasized the importance of Articles 61 and 62 of the new law. Article 61 allows addicts to voluntarily seek treatment at hospitals in complete confidentiality, without creating a prior record.
  • Article 62 permits family members, up to the third degree, to submit an addiction complaint to the Public Prosecution, prompting authorities to arrest and place the addict in treatment centers, ensuring rehabilitation while safeguarding their future.

Less than 48 hours after the implementation of Anti-Drug Law No. 159 of 2025, Kuwait’s Ministry of Interior and state agencies are already witnessing tangible results on the ground.

Dozens of families rushed to report their drug-using children, seeking treatment under the new law, avoiding severe penalties, and ensuring that their children’s records remain clear to protect their professional and social futures.

Security sources told Al-Rai that the Ministry’s pre-law awareness campaigns have contributed to citizens proactively reporting drug use.

Around 30 family reports were received within the first two days, highlighting the community’s responsiveness and trust in the new legal framework.

The Directorate-General for Drug Control launched extensive security campaigns targeting suspicious locations across several areas.

These efforts led to the arrest of 13 individuals, including dealers and promoters, along with the seizure of narcotics.

All suspects, of various nationalities, were referred to the Drug Prosecution for legal action under the provisions of the new law, which includes penalties ranging from long-term imprisonment to life sentences or even death in severe cases.

Officials emphasized the importance of Articles 61 and 62 of the new law. Article 61 allows addicts to voluntarily seek treatment at hospitals in complete confidentiality, without creating a prior record.

Article 62 permits family members, up to the third degree, to submit an addiction complaint to the Public Prosecution, prompting authorities to arrest and place the addict in treatment centers, ensuring rehabilitation while safeguarding their future.

Authorities concluded that the upcoming phase will feature comprehensive security campaigns across all governorates, with strict enforcement against drug use, smuggling, promotion, or cultivation, reinforcing Kuwait’s commitment to protect society and maintain public safety.
