Ministry detects cryptocurrency mining activities in 100 homes in Al-Wafra

Ministry reaffirms its commitment to continue monitoring and analyzing electricity consumption data across the country

Engineer Fatima Jawhar Hayat, spokesperson of the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, announced approximately 100 homes in the Al-Wafra residential area have been identified as potentially engaging in cryptocurrency mining activities.

As part of the ministry’s ongoing efforts to ensure the efficiency and sustainability of Kuwait’s electrical system, Hayat explained, a notable spike in electricity usage had been recorded over the past two weeks across various sectors — including residential, commercial, industrial, and agricultural zones.

According to Al-Rai, in response, the ministry launched a comprehensive field inspection campaign in the Al-Wafra area last Sunday.

“Initial findings revealed that around 100 homes exhibited electricity consumption patterns significantly higher than those typical of residential properties,” Hayat stated. “These anomalies suggest unauthorized activities, most prominently cryptocurrency mining.”

She further elaborated that a detailed technical analysis found a constant and elevated electricity load throughout the day and across all hours, with no normal fluctuations between day and night or between seasons. This consistent high demand, she noted, is characteristic of operations running intensive computing equipment around the clock.

“In some cases, consumption exceeded 100,000 kilowatt-hours during March 2025 — nearly 20 times the typical usage of neighboring homes. Such figures cannot be attributed to ordinary household use,” she said.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to continue monitoring and analyzing electricity consumption data across the country. It also acknowledged the valuable support of the Communications and Information Technology Regulatory Authority in tracking Internet Protocol (IP) addresses linked to suspicious activities, such as digital mining operations, and commended the collaboration of the Ministry of Interior.

Concluding the statement, the Ministry urged all citizens and residents to use electricity responsibly and to cooperate with inspection teams. It warned that legal action will be taken against any individual or entity found to be misusing electricity through unlicensed or unauthorized activities that jeopardize the stability of the national power grid.
