Minister Al-Mishari issues new guidelines for naming areas and streets

Minister of State for Municipal Affairs and Minister of State for Housing Affairs, Abdullatif Al-Mishari, has issued a decision amending provisions of Ministerial Resolution No. 507 of 2023 concerning the naming of cities, suburbs, regions, roads, streets, and public squares.

The decision clarifies that cities, suburbs, and regions cannot be named after individuals, except for those who have held the position of Amir or Crown Prince of Kuwait.

For roads, streets, and public squares, naming can be reserved for:

  • Rulers of Kuwait, kings, sultans, governors, princes, and selected sheikhs from the ruling family
  • Heads of sister and friendly countries
  • Historical figures
  • Countries, cities, and capitals (based on the principle of reciprocity)

The decision emphasizes that existing roads, streets, and public squares without personal names will retain their current designations.

Furthermore, the amendment introduces a shift towards numbering roads, streets, and squares for all other cases, streamlining navigation and urban planning while limiting arbitrary naming after individuals.

This update reflects the government’s effort to standardize naming conventions and maintain consistency across Kuwait’s urban and suburban areas.
