Migratory birds in autumn highlight Kuwait’s environmental richness

Kuwait is currently hosting approximately 234 bird species as the autumn migration season takes flight, signaling the transition from the heat of summer to milder weather. The first to arrive is the hoopoe, historically known as the messenger of Prophet Solomon (peace be upon him), heralding the seasonal change.
Dr. Sarah Al-Dosari, a researcher at the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research, told Al-Rai that flocks of flamingos have recently appeared at Sulaibikhat beach, marking the first wave of these elegant birds. They are expected to remain in Kuwait until the end of February, arriving in successive groups throughout the season.

Dr. Al-Dosari highlighted other prominent visitors, including herons, various types of eagles and vultures, as well as desert species inhabiting Abraq Al-Houbara and Jahra Reserve, such as sandgrouse, turtledoves, larks, and owls. Waterbirds like gulls, pelicans, ducks, and geese populate Kuwait’s islands, including Failaka, Kubbar, Warba, and Bubiyan.
“The 234 species that migrate to Kuwait for the autumn season contribute greatly to the ecosystem,” Dr. Al-Dosari explained. “They help pollinate flowers, disperse seeds in desert areas, clean the environment by removing carcasses, and prevent the spread of diseases.”
The Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research collaborates annually with the Environment Public Authority to protect these migratory birds, especially endangered species, ensuring they remain safe from poaching and extinction.
Dr. Al-Dosari emphasized that the greater the diversity of bird species, the healthier the environment, given the unique ecological roles each species fulfills.
Dr. Al-Dosari also outlined three main migration routes: from Central Asia, Eastern Europe, and the Arctic. These birds seek warmer climates across the Arabian Peninsula, with some stopping to breed and others continuing their journey to the Indian subcontinent and Africa.
