Iran’s armed forces have issued a stark warning, declaring they are prepared to close the Strait of Hormuz indefinitely if US President Donald Trump follows through on his threat to bomb Iran’s power plants.
The statement, released Sunday, marks the latest escalation in Tehran’s response to perceived attacks on its energy infrastructure.
Trump, on Saturday, gave Iran a 48-hour ultimatum to ensure the strait is fully open to shipping or face the “obliteration” of key power plants. In response, Iran’s military declared that any such action would prompt a full closure of the strait, which would remain sealed until damaged power facilities are rebuilt.
The statement further warned that all Israeli energy and communications infrastructure, along with “similar companies in the region with U.S. shareholders,” would be considered legitimate targets, according to CNN.
Additionally, “power plants of regional countries hosting US bases will be legitimate targets for us,” the armed forces said.
Earlier, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf added on social media that critical infrastructure and energy facilities in the Middle East could face “irreversible destruction” if Iranian power plants are attacked.
The threats from Tehran come amid heightened global concerns over regional stability, energy security, and the free flow of oil and gas through one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints.
Analysts warn that any disruption could send oil prices soaring and exacerbate tensions across the Middle East and beyond.
