Michel delivers Insightful Talk at KDI on Global Geopolitical Crises

The Times Kuwait Report
The Kuwait Diplomatic Institute recently hosted Charles Michel, former President of the European Council, for a compelling and timely lecture on today’s global geopolitical challenges. The talk, titled “From Crises to Chance,” offered a distinguished audience of diplomats valuable insights into how geopolitical shocks can be transformed into strategic opportunities in an evolving world order.
Speaking with candor and conviction, Michel addressed a wide range of pressing issues facing the European Union, including regulatory hurdles, defense strategies, and migration policies. He emphasized the need for a renewed approach and stronger partnerships to safeguard EU citizens and their interests.
Michel acknowledged perceptions of the EU as being overly didactic in global affairs, noting that the Union itself continues to wrestle with complex internal challenges. He advocated for urgent institutional reform to enhance the EU’s effectiveness and align it more closely with today’s political and economic realities. He also underscored the difficulties of achieving consensus among EU member states, given their diverse national interests.
In addition, Michel highlighted the growing importance of big data, artificial intelligence, and outer space as emerging arenas of global power and competition. He stressed the need for the EU to pursue more international trade agreements, arguing that Europe can no longer afford to be a passive observer on the world stage.
Touching on broader global shifts, Michel pointed to the rise of “middle powers” and their increasing influence in shaping global trade and geopolitics.
When asked about the ongoing crisis in Gaza, Michel acknowledged the EU’s complex internal dynamics, which make unified foreign policy positions challenging. However, he noted that a growing awareness of the humanitarian situation has led several European countries to recognize the State of Palestine.
Overall, Michel’s talk provided deep insights into the current challenges facing the European Union and offered a broader perspective on the rapidly shifting global geopolitical landscape. Held at the Kuwait Diplomatic Institute’s theatre, the event proved to be another thought-provoking contribution to the ongoing evolution of modern diplomacy.
