MEW ramps up power and water maintenance ahead of summer peak

The Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy has stepped up maintenance work on power generation units and water production distillers in preparation for the upcoming summer season.
According to informed sources, 37 electricity production units are currently undergoing maintenance, with 29 units kept on standby and 45 units are actively producing electricity to meet national demand alongside imports from the Gulf interconnection network.
The sources emphasized that all maintenance operations are proceeding according to the annual maintenance schedule, reports Al-Rai daily.
The ministry is also performing maintenance on water production facilities, taking advantage of the country’s moderate weather, which currently keeps electricity and water consumption lower than the peak summer months.
Presently, 15 water distillers are under maintenance, 7 are out of service, while 35 distillers remain operational, supported by two reserve units.
Meanwhile, a fact-finding committee continues investigating recent sudden outages of power generation units. The committee, formed by Minister Dr. Subaih Al-Mukhaizeem and chaired by former Minister Mohammed Boushehri, recently met with officials at the Doha East Power Station to discuss the causes of the disruptions.
Sources anticipate the committee’s final report will be submitted by late November or early December.
In a separate development, the ministry hosted a two-day “Health Department” exhibition at its headquarters under the patronage of Undersecretary Engineer Adel Al-Zamil.
Ministry spokesperson Engineer Fatima Hayat highlighted the exhibition’s focus on employee health, noting its link to workplace efficiency and performance. The event featured specialists in physiotherapy, chronic disease management, and general health, offering free preliminary health examinations to ministry staff.
