MEW minister gives nod for conversion of fishing licenses

. . . from yoke to trap licenses under new regulations

Dr. Subaih Al-Mukhaizeem, Minister of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, has issued a decision permitting the conversion of fishing licenses from the yoke method to the trap method, subject to specific regulations.

The decision limits the conversion rate to a maximum of 20 percent of licenses for each fishing method, reports Al-Rai daily.

If applications exceed this quota, priority will be given based on the order of submission in the Authority’s general registry during the designated period.

Holders of license are allowed to change their license type only during January each year, within a one-month window.

The resolution mandates that the Technical Committee for Fisheries Sector Affairs review the controls annually.

The committee is the authority to recommend suspending or modifying the conversion rules wholly or partially based on environmental considerations and fishing activity levels.
