MEW allocates 15 new tenders to upgrade Doha East power station

. . . as Kuwait intensifies efforts to contain the harsh summer weather

The Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy has earmarked 15 tenders in its current fiscal budget to support the maintenance, development, and modernization of the Doha East power station, in preparation for submitting them to the Central Agency for Public Tenders.

Doha East is one of Kuwait’s key electricity production facilities, with a total installed capacity of 1,122 megawatts. The station comprises seven steam turbine units generating 150 megawatts each (totaling 1,050 MW), along with four gas turbine units producing 18 megawatts each (totaling 72 MW). In addition to power generation, the station supplies 42 million imperial gallons of water per day.

The Ministry’s move to launch these 15 tenders reflects its ongoing commitment to upgrading all nine electricity and water production plants, including the Shagaya Renewable Energy Complex, to ensure optimal readiness for the high-demand summer season, when consumption typically doubles.

The tenders cover a range of critical works, including improving the cleaning system, removing marine debris from the seawater intake, supplying and installing a new transformer for the distillers, and providing two 50-volt battery chargers to enhance electricity continuity and reliability.

The Ministry confirmed that an additional tender for the broader development and modernization of the Doha East station will also be launched this fiscal year. It will be directed to specialized companies accredited by the Central Agency for Public Tenders, in line with the standards and procedures stipulated in Kuwait’s Public Tenders Law.
