Argentine legend Lionel Messi has officially surpassed his long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo to claim the record for the most non-penalty goals in football history.
Messi scored a brace for Inter Miami in their commanding 5-1 win over the New York Red Bulls in Major League Soccer (MLS) on Sunday, bringing his non-penalty goal tally to 764 — one more than Ronaldo’s 763. Notably, Messi achieved this feat in 167 fewer matches, highlighting his remarkable efficiency in front of goal.
The first of Messi’s two goals came in the 60th minute, drawing him level with Ronaldo. He then broke the record in the 75th minute with his second strike of the game — continuing his dominant form with six braces in his last seven MLS appearances.
The performance reaffirms Messi’s status as one of football’s greatest-ever players and adds another historic milestone to his legendary career.
