Luigi Di Maio leaves Kuwait after a successful visit

The European Union Special Representative for the Gulf region, Luigi Di Maio, concluded a two-day official visit to Kuwait, during which he held high-level meetings aimed at deepening EU-Kuwait and EU-GCC relations.

On Sunday, Di Maio met with Kuwait’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdullah Ali Al-Yahya, as well as the Minister of Oil, Tareq Sulaiman Al-Roumi.

He was also received by the Director General of the Kuwait Direct Investment Promotion Authority (KDIPA), Sheikh Dr. Mishaal Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, and participated in a working lunch hosted by Deputy Foreign Minister, Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah.

This marked Mr. Di Maio’s fourth visit to Kuwait since being appointed as the first EU Special Representative for the Gulf region in June 2023.

Before his departure, Di Maio expressed his satisfaction with the visit. He stated, “I am very happy to be back in Kuwait for such productive and very important meetings in order to advance the EU-Kuwait as well as EU-GCC strategic partnership agendas. I am very optimistic about the political will and commitment to capitalize on the many joint initiatives ahead of us.”

As the current holder of the GCC Presidency, Kuwait plays a key role in driving forward the EU-GCC strategic partnership. Later this year, Kuwait will host the 29th Joint Council and Ministerial Meeting between the EU and the GCC. In addition, the 9th EU-GCC Business Forum is scheduled to take place in Kuwait towards the end of 2025.

Di Maio’s visit reflects the European Union’s continued efforts to elevate its longstanding partnership with Kuwait to a strategic level. He previously joined the Minister of Foreign Affairs in July to attend a celebration organized by the EU Delegation, marking the 5th anniversary of its presence in Kuwait.

Looking ahead, the EU eagerly anticipates commemorating the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the European Union and Kuwait next year.
