Lamine Yamal follows Messi’s footsteps, wears Barcelona’s legendary No 10 Shirt

Says, "I don’t compare myself to Messi, because I don’t compare myself to anyone. Messi made his way, and I will make mine.”

Just three days after his 18th birthday, Barcelona prodigy Lamine Yamal received the club’s ultimate vote of confidence — the iconic number 10 shirt, once worn by legends such as Lionel Messi, Ronaldinho, and Diego Maradona.

Though he’s careful not to compare himself to Messi, Yamal’s rise has drawn inevitable parallels. Since debuting at just 15 in 2023, the Spanish winger has made over 100 appearances, scored 25 goals, and helped the Catalan giants win two La Liga titles.

Still, his trajectory mirrors the Argentine icon: a left-footed right winger, a graduate of La Masia, and now the youngest player to score in El Clasico and win a major international title, having helped Spain clinch the Euro 2024 title one day after turning 17.

He’s also a contender for the 2025 Ballon d’Or, following a season in which he was instrumental in Barcelona’s domestic treble — La Liga, Copa del Rey, and Spanish Super Cup.

Despite his calm demeanor on the pitch, Yamal’s off-field life has stirred headlines. His lavish 18th birthday party, which reportedly included dwarf performers, prompted a Spanish government investigation over potential labor law violations.

Still, Yamal remains focused: “We have to continue to enjoy ourselves above all else, because when we enjoy ourselves, we are happier and can win.”

Over the summer, he vacationed in Brazil with Neymar, whom he called “my role model,” and continues to hone his game, especially in front of goal — scoring six goals in his last nine matches for club and country.

In May, Yamal signed a long-term contract through 2031, becoming one of Barcelona’s highest-paid players, a testament to the club’s belief in his immense potential.

He may be wearing the number 10 shirt, but Lamine Yamal is determined to forge his own legacy, not live in the shadow of others.

“I will strive to continue this legacy,” he said. Whether he can emulate Messi’s longevity and eight Ballon d’Or titles remains to be seen, but all signs suggest Yamal is ready for the challenge — and the spotlight.
