The Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Company (KUFPEC) has received official approval to proceed with the development of the Anambas Working Area, located offshore in Indonesia’s Natuna Sea.
This milestone follows the signing of the Plan of Development (POD) by Indonesia’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, on April 25, 2025, according to Indonesia Business Post.
“This is excellent news. With this investment and development plan in place, Indonesia’s energy security will be enhanced, and domestic supply will improve,” said Djoko Siswanto, Head of Indonesia’s upstream regulator SKK Migas, during a press briefing on May 15, 2025.
The Anambas project supports President Prabowo Subianto’s “Asta Cita” vision, which prioritizes national energy security through 2029. Djoko stated that the final investment decision (FID) is anticipated by the fourth quarter of 2025, with gas production expected to commence in Q4 2027.
Once operational, the Anambas block is projected to deliver 55 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (mmscfd) under a gross split production sharing contract. Djoko highlighted the POD approval as a signal of Indonesia’s continued appeal to energy investors.
“Indonesia’s upstream oil and gas sector remains a compelling destination for both local and international investors,” he added.
The development plan includes drilling production wells from a wellhead platform, installing subsea pipelines, and linking the site to existing infrastructure in West Natuna.
Gas from the field will serve both domestic and export markets. KUFPEC secured the gross split contract in June 2019, granting it a 30-year operational term until 2049. The Anambas block was awarded to the company during the 2019 Phase I Regular Bid Round, which concluded in May 2019.
