Kuwait’s Health Ministry urges precautions against climate change effects

The Ministry of Health has cautioned people to exercise caution and enjoy winter safely by following preventive guidelines and avoiding direct exposure to cold and moist air, especially for asthma and allergy patients.

The official spokesman for the Ministry of Health, Dr. Abdullah Al-Sanad, emphasized the importance of following preventive guidelines during rainy weather.

While climate changes can be beautiful, they also pose health risks, particularly for vulnerable groups such as respiratory patients, the elderly, and children, who need to take extra precautions.

Al-Sanad, in a statement to the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) today, Thursday, emphasized that driving during rain requires heightened attention and traffic responsibility. Rainwater reduces the tyre-road friction, increasing the risk of slipping. He advised reducing speed and maintaining a safe distance between vehicles as essential measures to prevent accidents and ensure road safety.

Furthermore, Al-Sanad stressed the importance of avoiding direct exposure to moist and cold air, particularly for asthma and allergy patients; as such conditions can worsen respiratory symptoms due to airborne allergens.

Al-Sanad added that scientific studies have shown high humidity can increase the likelihood of bronchial spasms in asthma patients, highlighting the importance of carrying asthma inhalers and following prescribed treatment plans. He also recommended keeping windows closed in homes and vehicles to minimize exposure to air irritants carried by rain.

Regarding handling of electrical devices during rainy weather, Al-Sanad warned of the importance of exercising caution, as water can cause electrical contact and lead to serious risks. He stressed that electrical wires and sockets should not be touched with wet hands and emphasized ensuring that water does not leak into electrical devices, highlighting these preventive measures to reduce domestic accidents.

Al-Sanad emphasized the importance of following weather bulletins from official authorities and adhering to the directives of relevant agencies, whether regarding traffic or preventive measures at home, to ensure maximum safety.

Moreover, Al-Sanad stressed that promptly contacting health authorities and seeking medical assistance when needed is a responsible action that should not be delayed, particularly when experiencing unusual health symptoms.

Al-Sanad noted that the Ministry of Health continues to raise awareness about preventive measures to ensure the health and safety of all. He urged community members to enjoy the winter atmosphere while adhering to precautionary steps that promote public health and reduce potential risks.
