Kuwait’s emergency medicine departments handle 2.5 million visits annually

The Minister of Health, Dr. Ahmed Al-Awadhi, confirmed today, Wednesday, that the Ministry is keeping pace with the latest scientific developments, reflecting its commitment to leveraging advanced technology in the field of medical emergencies. This approach aims to contribute to achieving an integrated and comprehensive healthcare system, ensuring high-quality medical services.

Minister Al-Awadhi, in his opening speech at the third conference of the Council of Emergency Medicine Departments, highlighted the conference’s role as a scientific platform for addressing key challenges and exploring innovative solutions in emergency medicine. He emphasized that this vital sector is a cornerstone in the advancement of both medical and academic services, for continuous development and excellence in healthcare.

Al-Awadhi explained that holding this conference reflects a continued commitment to advancing this vital specialty within the health system. The goal is to provide the best treatment methods and ensure continuous training for medical personnel, ultimately achieving the highest levels of efficiency in delivering emergency medical care.

The emergency sector is one of the main pillars of the health system, standing on the front lines to handle critical cases and deliver life-saving immediate care. Al-Awadhi noted that the field of emergency medicine has witnessed remarkable development since the launch of its program in October 2010 under the Kuwait Institute for Medical Specializations, with the inclusion of specialized areas related to emergency care.

Al-Awadhi stressed that general emergency departments in Kuwait receive about 2.5 million patients and visitors annually, underscoring the significance of this conference. Bringing together an elite group of experts and specialists, the event serves as a platform to discuss the latest scientific developments, address challenges, and outline a roadmap for advancing this crucial field.

The head of the conference organizing committee, Dr. Munira Al-Asfour, stated that emergency medicine has undergone a radical transformation in the modern era. It is no longer merely a response to urgent cases but has evolved into a cornerstone of global health systems. This progress is supported by specialized academic programs, advanced clinical research, and modern technologies that enhance the efficiency of healthcare delivery.

Al-Asfour added that emergency medicine is now expanding into various sub-tracks, including immediate care, injuries and accidents, crisis and disaster management, toxicology, pediatric emergencies, and wildlife emergency medicine, along with other related specialties.

Moreover, Al-Asfour explained that the conference’s comprehensive scientific program spans over 30 hours, aiming to equip emergency care providers with foundational knowledge, best practices, and the latest developments in emergency medicine. This approach is designed to enhance skills and improve services in healthcare facilities.

Al-Asfour noted that the Emergency Medicine Program has experienced remarkable growth since its early years, with demand for its seats increasing more than tenfold. This surge in interest is expected to help address the long-term shortage of specialized emergency physicians who have obtained a specialization certificate.
