Kuwait’s 48-million-dinar desalination plant to boost water security

The government plans to establish a state-of-the-art factory producing high-quality bottled water from coastal wells, leveraging water desalination technology powered by renewable energy.

The project, which is strategic and developmental in nature, aligns with Kuwait’s national development plan by reducing dependence on oil, extending its lifespan for future generations, and cutting carbon dioxide emissions to protect the environment, reports Al-Anba daily.

The initiative aims to create a sustainable living environment through an integrated model for an advanced research center dedicated to water desalination using renewable energy by building a pilot plant capable of producing one million imperial gallons of fresh water per day using alternative energy.

This is in addition to extracting salts and economically valuable elements from the highly saline water generated by desalination processes and establishing a factory capable of producing 36,000 bottles of high-quality water per hour from coastal wells.

Scheduled for completion in 2029, the project will support the testing of commercially available desalination technologies to identify those most technically and economically viable for Kuwait. It also aims to produce fresh water from subsurface wells in residential areas, select the best desalination methods, and drill additional wells for sustainable water production.

The total project cost is estimated at 48 million Kuwaiti dinars. Plans include installing four million water guides in public and private buildings, establishing a center to support decision-making, and building national capacities in water security, desalination technology, and extraction of valuable elements from saline water.

According to sources, the desalination center will enhance water conservation, reduce freshwater consumption, improve emergency management in case of water shortages, optimize natural resource utilization, increase water production at lower cost, and contribute to environmental protection.
