Kuwaiti shrimp season kicks off; abundant catch; affordable prices

The Secretary-General of the Kuwaiti Fishermen’s Union, Barak Al-Subaie, announced the official launch of the shrimp fishing season in Kuwait’s economic waters, with 275 local dinghies setting sail to supply the domestic market with fresh local shrimp.
He said the first day of fishing yielded promising results, with shrimp returning in abundance and prices remaining within reach and importantly affordable for consumers, reports Al-Rai daily.
Al-Subaie expressed optimism among fishermen, pointing to a successful zubaidi fishing season, which began in mid-July and has already contributed to a noticeable drop in fish prices.
Currently, the price for a medium-sized “kod” zubaidi fish ranges from 40 to 60 Kuwaiti dinars, marking a favorable shift for both sellers and buyers.
In terms of catch volume, Al-Subaie noted that in just the past 24 hours, fishermen caught approximately 8 tons of shrimp and 3 tons of sea bream. Among the shrimp varieties, a basket of “Shahamiya” sold for 20 dinars, while the “Umm Nughira” variety fetched between 47 and 60 dinars, depending on the market and quality.
He also shared auction details, pointing out that the Fahaheel fish auction begins at 8:00 a.m., while the Sharq market auction takes place after the afternoon prayer. Both locations have seen strong turnout from citizens and consumers, signaling renewed public demand and confidence in local seafood.
Al-Subaie emphasized the importance of supporting the national fishing fleet and ensuring the sustainability of marine resources, especially amid favorable weather and fishing conditions that promise a strong season ahead.
