Kuwaiti diving team removes quarter-ton of ghost nets from Arifjan reef
The Kuwaiti diving team affiliated with the Environmental Voluntary Foundation has removed around a quarter ton of discarded fishing nets trapped in coral reefs at the Arifjan marine site, while also rescuing a number of marine creatures caught in the nets.
Team leader Waleed Al-Fadhel said the operation was conducted at a depth of 12 meters below the sea surface and covered an area of approximately 30 square meters. He said the operation forms part of the team’s ongoing efforts to clean Kuwait’s marine environment, protect coral reefs and enhance navigational safety.
Al-Fadhel explained that abandoned fishing nets, commonly known as “ghost nets,” pose a significant threat to marine ecosystems. They can suffocate coral reefs and prevent sunlight from reaching them, while also trapping fish and other marine organisms and causing their death.
