Kuwaiti ambassador praises Swedish museum’s role in preserving history

The Ambassador of Kuwait to Sweden, H.E. Mohammad Hayati, praised the efforts of the Swedish National Museum of Architecture and Design (ArkDes) in safeguarding historical documents. He highlighted the strong ties between the two nations in the fields of architecture and engineering design.

According to a statement from the Kuwaiti Embassy in Sweden, Ambassador Hayati, accompanied by Secretary General of the Swedish Parliament Ingvar Mattesson, visited ArkDes on Friday. The museum houses the original archives of the Kuwait Towers, designed by Swedish-Danish architect Malin Björn and her husband, Swedish architect Sune Lindström, through the company VBB (now Sweco Engineering), reports Al-Rai daily.

During the visit, Ambassador Hayati stressed that the Kuwait Towers are not only a symbol of Kuwait’s modernity, but also a lasting testament to Kuwaiti-Swedish cooperation in the 1960s and 1970s. He noted that the towers embody contemporary architectural art rooted in Kuwait’s heritage and stand today as one of the Gulf’s most iconic landmarks.

The visit also included Jo Lindström, son of architect Sune Lindström, who emphasized his family’s pride in contributing to the towers’ design and construction. He recalled working alongside his parents on the project, which was inaugurated in 1979. Museum officials reaffirmed their commitment to preserving this joint cultural heritage, while both sides underscored the importance of further cooperation in design, architecture, and heritage preservation as Kuwait and Sweden celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations.
