Kuwait urges Security Council reform amid comprehensive UN overhaul

Dr. Abdullah Al-Yahya, Minister of Foreign Affairs, emphasized developed countries’ responsibility to lead in creating fairer partnerships and fulfilling commitments to support least developed countries through technology transfer and debt relief.

Dr. Abdullah Al-Yahya, Minister of Foreign Affairs, emphasized the urgent need for a robust global order based on multilateral principles to address political, humanitarian, health, security, and environmental challenges.

Minister Al-Yahya expressed aspirations for reforming the current international system to achieve greater justice, stability, and sustainability in the near future.

 

Dr. Abdullah Al-Yahya, Minister of Foreign Affairs, led Kuwaits delegation at the Security Council session on the existing international system, titled “Multilateral cooperation towards a more just, democratic, and sustainable world,” Al Anba newspaper reported.

Minister Al-Yahya delivered Kuwait’s speech during yesterday evening’s session, emphasizing the importance of recommitting the international community to the goals, principles, and objectives of the United Nations Charter.

He highlighted that the Charter serves as the cornerstone of collective international action and a framework for enhancing international cooperation in addressing global challenges.

He reiterated Kuwait’s call for reforming the Security Council as part of the broader United Nations reform process, supporting efforts aimed at comprehensive and genuine reform to increase its capability and effectiveness in addressing current challenges from a more representative, transparent, impartial, and credible perspective.

Minister Al-Yahya also addressed political, humanitarian, and health crises, challenges related to food and energy security, climate change impacts, poverty, threats to international peace and security, and other transboundary crises. These issues, he stressed, underscore the urgent need for a robust and effective global order based on global partnership and solidarity, anchored in the fundamental values and principles of multilateralism as governed by international law and UN regulations.

He emphasized that developed countries should take a leading role in fostering a fairer and more balanced partnership. They should fulfill their agreed commitments to support the development of the least developed countries through technology transfer and debt relief, along with providing development assistance aligned with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Minister Al-Yahya concluded his speech by expressing aspirations for reforming the current international system to achieve greater justice, stability, and sustainability in the near future.

Foreign Minister Abdullah Al-Yahya met with Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Economy and Planning, Faisal bin Al-Ibrahim. During the meeting, they reviewed the strong and close historical relations between the two countries and their brotherly peoples, discussing ways to strengthen and develop them in various vital and important fields, particularly in economics and development.

Kuwait, Lebanon to boost cooperation

Foreign Minister Al-Yahya also met with Lebanese Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Dr. Abdullah Bohabib. During their meeting, they discussed the close relations between the two brotherly countries and current developments in Lebanon. The two sides also reviewed forum topics and issues, coordinating jointly to support and strengthen international cooperation efforts.

Kuwait-Iran discuss ways to enhance bilateral ties

Al-Yahya also met with Ali Bagheri Kani, the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran. The meeting covered the overall close bilateral relations between the two friendly countries and the frameworks for their promotion and development, as well as discussing the latest developments in regional and international arenas.

Kuwait and Russia review latest regional, international developments

In addition, Foreign Minister Abdullah Al-Yahya met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

The meeting addressed the close relations between the two friendly countries and frameworks for their promotion and development in various fields. They also reviewed the latest developments in regional and international arenas, particularly focusing on the crisis in Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, developments regarding the Palestinian issue, and tragic events in Gaza. These meetings occurred on Wednesday on the sidelines of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development held from the 15th to the 17th at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
