Kuwait urges Iran to enhance transparency with IAEA and ratify additional protocol

Kuwait on Wednesday called on Iran for more cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and respond to the agency’s recent report highlighting a significant loss of monitoring data in critical areas, including centrifuge activity and uranium enrichment levels.

The appeal was made during Kuwait’s address before the IAEA Board of Governors in Vienna, delivered by Dr. Sarah Al-Ajmi, Third Secretary of the Permanent Mission of Kuwait to the United Nations, reports Al-Qabas daily.

In her speech, Dr Al-Ajmi called on Iran to ratify the Additional Protocol to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, noting that such a step would boost international confidence and empower the IAEA to carry out its verification duties more effectively.

She reaffirmed Kuwait’s support for diplomatic solutions and constructive dialogue, expressing hope that international efforts will lead to the resumption of negotiations and the conclusion of a permanent, binding agreement that ensures regional security and stability.

Dr Al-Ajmi also underscored Kuwait’s appreciation for the IAEA’s vital role in maintaining the global non-proliferation regime and reiterated Kuwait’s full support for the agency’s impartial and professional work.

Highlighting Kuwait’s commitment to the peaceful use of nuclear energy, she stressed the importance of international cooperation to ensure the safe, secure, and responsible application of nuclear technologies in support of sustainable development.

She further emphasized the crucial balance within the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which grants states the right to peaceful nuclear energy in return for their obligations to cooperate with the IAEA and prevent the misuse of nuclear activities.
