Kuwait urged to expand multi-level parking and enforce traffic approvals
GTD calls on Municipality for comprehensive congestion solutions

The General Traffic Department has urged the Municipality to submit final recommendations to address Kuwait’s growing traffic congestion.
The proposals include encouraging private sector investment in multi-level parking, allocating sites for parking construction in high-traffic commercial areas, and planning for multi-level parking in future developments. The department also stressed the need to regulate random truck parking.
In a letter to the Municipality, the General Traffic Department called for a comprehensive traffic study of Kuwait’s road network and emphasized strict adherence to the master plan.
It highlighted that school licenses, particularly in the Sabah Al-Salem area, were issued without the department’s traffic studies or technical approvals. The department requested alternative land sites for private schools in Sabah Al-Salem Block 1.
Further recommendations include not granting or modifying licenses for high-density projects without the department’s approval, suspending construction and expansion licenses for schools until traffic impact studies are reviewed, and linking building permit requirements to the completion of all traffic study recommendations.
