Kuwait turns to GCC power imports to support maintenance, grid stability

Kuwait is maintaining its purchases of electricity from the Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority in the coming months as the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy prepares to begin major maintenance work on power generation and water desalination units and give maintenance teams greater operational flexibility while ensuring that scheduled work can proceed without putting pressure on the national electricity network, particularly ahead of next summer’s peak demand season.
According to reliable sources, the volume of electricity purchased through the GCC interconnection network will be reviewed periodically based on changes in domestic consumption. The purchase tariff and required quantities will consequently be adjusted according to the needs of the national grid.
From a commercial and operational perspective, the continued use of GCC-linked electricity supplies provides Kuwait with an additional source of power while generating room to take production units offline for maintenance. This can help reduce the risk of supply disruptions and allow the ministry to improve the efficiency and reliability of its generating assets.
The sources said the ministry’s experience during the past winter demonstrated the value of the arrangement, as electricity purchases from the GCC interconnection network helped facilitate maintenance work on generation units and desalination plants without compromising network stability.
The ministry is now seeking to replicate that approach during the coming period, particularly as maintenance requirements increase. Maintaining access to imported electricity allows the ministry to balance supply and demand more efficiently while production units undergo scheduled servicing.
The sources also said the ministry is coordinating with relevant authorities to accelerate major power-generation projects designed to increase national production capacity. The objective is to ensure that available generation remains above consumption levels and strengthens Kuwait’s electricity security over the longer term.
The push to expand generation capacity is commercially significant as rising electricity demand increases the need for investment in new production infrastructure, while adequate reserve margins remain essential to maintaining reliable supplies.
Meanwhile, the electricity distribution networks sector is preparing to begin its annual maintenance programme at the start of October. Maintenance work in the electricity transmission networks sector, meanwhile, continues throughout the year.
Kuwait’s approach therefore combines short-term electricity purchases through the GCC interconnection system with maintenance of existing assets and investment in additional generation capacity, creating greater flexibility in managing the national power system.
