Kuwait temporarily closes airspace until further notice
In a decisive move reflecting growing regional instability, Kuwait’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) announced the temporary closure of the country’s airspace effective immediately and until further notice.
The decision comes amid escalating military activity in the Gulf following Iran’s missile strike on the U.S. Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar and widespread fears of broader conflict.
In its official statement, the DGCA emphasized that the measure was taken “in the interest of the security and safety of the state,” citing precautionary actions implemented by neighboring countries—several of which have already shut down airports and restricted their airspace, reports Al-Rai daily.
“The State of Kuwait announces the temporary closure of its airspace as a precautionary measure, effective today until further notice,” the DGCA stated.
The authority added that the decision aligns with Kuwait’s commitment to maintaining “the highest levels of safety and security” amid unfolding regional developments. Coordination is actively ongoing with relevant local and international authorities to assess the evolving situation and respond accordingly.
The move underscores rising concern in the Gulf over the potential for military escalation between Iran, the United States, and Israel, particularly after Iran vowed to retaliate for recent U.S. airstrikes on its nuclear facilities. Qatar, which was directly targeted by Iranian missiles, also announced an airspace suspension earlier in the day.
Kuwait’s airspace closure affects both commercial and civilian aviation, and airlines are expected to reroute flights until further instructions are issued by authorities.
