Kuwait takes center stage in Geneva, plays active role in global health, humanitarian efforts

Committed to play its role as a leading donor and humanitarian partner, guided by the vision of its political leadership to uphold Kuwait’s legacy as a global capital of humanitarian action

Kuwait is reaffirming its commitment to global health and humanitarian issues through active participation in key international events, including the 78th session of the World Health Assembly and the launch of its first-ever strategic dialogue with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), according to Ambassador Nasser Al-Hayyen, Kuwait’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva.

Speaking to the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), Ambassador Al-Hayyen stated that a high-level Kuwaiti delegation, led by Minister of Health Dr. Ahmad Al-Awadhi, will attend the World Health Assembly in Geneva, which runs from May 19 to 27. The event brings together representatives from member states and health stakeholders under the theme “One World for Health,” aiming to address critical and emerging global health challenges.

“This session comes at a vital time for international public health,” said Al-Hayyen. “With shifting dynamics in global development and the health sector — particularly following the U.S. withdrawal as the World Health Organization’s largest donor — this meeting is essential for adopting resolutions that enhance international cooperation and reinforce the organization’s ability to respond effectively.”

Ambassador Al-Hayyen emphasized that Kuwait’s participation reflects its steadfast support for the World Health Organization (WHO) and its dedication to advancing preventive health strategies and sustainable healthcare systems worldwide.

Moreover, Kuwait is also set to hold its first joint strategic dialogue with the UNHCR this month, led by Deputy Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah. This initiative underscores the country’s long-standing partnership with the UN agency and its deep involvement in humanitarian and relief operations.

“The dialogue aims to strengthen institutional cooperation at a time when the global refugee crisis is escalating due to prolonged conflicts and emergencies,” Al-Hayyen noted.

He affirmed that Kuwait remains committed to its role as a leading donor and humanitarian partner, guided by the vision of its political leadership to uphold Kuwait’s legacy as a global capital of humanitarian action.

These efforts form part of Kuwait’s broader strategy to maintain and expand its influence in international forums, further solidifying its position as a key player in promoting global stability, health, and humanitarian aid.
