Kuwait submits key document to enhance global fisheries protection
The ratification of the amended Protocol to the Marrakesh Agreement highlights Kuwait’s commitment to a fair and sustainable global trade system while preserving natural resources and protecting the marine environment for future generations.

Kuwait has officially submitted the ratification document for the amended Protocol to the Marrakesh Agreement establishing the World Trade Organization (WTO) regarding fisheries protection. This action underscores Kuwait’s commitment to fostering a fair and sustainable global trade system while preserving natural resources and protecting the marine environment for future generations, as reported by Q8-Press.
Ambassador Nasser Al-Hayen, Permanent Representative of the State of Kuwait to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva, stated in a remark to the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), “The ratification of this amended protocol reflects the State of Kuwait’s support for the multilateral trade system and its commitment to promoting fair and sustainable international trade while strengthening efforts to combat illegal fishing practices and protect marine ecosystems.”
During his meeting with Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director-General of the World Trade Organization, Ambassador Al-Hayen emphasized Kuwait’s dedication to enhancing international cooperation in this field, highlighting the importance of collective efforts to ensure the successful implementation of the agreement.
He stressed the importance of continuing international dialogue in the face of the crises affecting the Middle East due to their direct impact on the entire world, emphasizing the need to adopt common approaches to ensure that these crises do not overshadow the State of Kuwait’s support for the Palestinian and Lebanese peoples.
Ambassador Al-Hayen also reiterated Kuwait’s commitment to working with all WTO member states to activate the provisions of the protocol and achieve its goals in improving the management of fisheries resources globally, which positively contributes to global economic stability.
He pointed out that the ratification of this protocol by the State of Kuwait is part of its commitment to achieving Goal 14 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which focuses on the preservation of life underwater and the protection of biodiversity in the seas and oceans.
Kuwait committed to preserve natural resources
Ambassador Al-Hayen explained that Kuwait’s accession to this protocol strengthens its position as a supporter of fair and sustainable global trade and reflects its commitment to preserving natural resources and protecting marine environments for future generations.
The protocol focuses on safeguarding fisheries and marine resources by reducing illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing practices that directly affect marine ecosystems and environmental sustainability.
With Kuwait’s accession, the number of WTO member states that have ratified this protocol now reaches 86.
The protocol requires ratification by two-thirds of WTO member states—specifically, twenty five additional member states—before it can enter into force.
