Kuwait studies proposal to build 1,500 megawatts Ratqa Power Plant

The Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, in coordination with the Kuwait Oil Company (KOC), is studying a proposal to establish the Ratqa Power Plant with a capacity ranging between 1,200 and 1,500 megawatts, to be implemented through the Kuwait Authority for Partnership Projects (KAPP).

According to informed sources, representatives from both parties recently met to discuss the proposed construction of the plant and the tendering process through KAPP.

The project, the Al-Rai daily said, is expected to strengthen the Ministry’s electricity generation capacity while enabling KOC to utilize steam from combustion processes to generate power efficiently.

The discussions also addressed technical and procedural aspects, including fuel supply sources, with officials emphasizing the Ministry’s commitment to advancing electricity and water production projects to meet the growing national demand—particularly for new residential and development areas.

The same sources expressed optimism regarding the progress of the Ministry’s projects in line with approved schedules.

They noted that the Minister of Commerce had recently issued a decision to establish a Kuwaiti joint-stock company, Gulf Alliance for Energy and Water, tasked with building, operating, and maintaining major strategic projects including Al-Zour North Power and Water Plant (phases two and three), the Al-Khiran Plant (first phase), and the third phase of the Shagaya Plant.
