Kuwait shapes Arab identity through decades of cultural leadership

Dr. Khaled Al-Muharib said Kuwait maintains a remarkable cultural presence in the Arab world, highlighting its efforts to promote the region’s culture and strengthen collaborative initiatives across its cultural sector.

Speaking after participating in the first annual forum of Arab cultural attachés, Al-Muharib said Kuwait maintains a “remarkable cultural presence” in the Arab world. He emphasized the country’s contributions to promoting Arab culture and reinforcing collaborative Arab initiatives in the cultural sector.

Dr. Khaled Al-Muharib highlighted Kuwait’s pioneering role in promoting soft power and culture across the Gulf region and the Arab world. He noted that the country’s leadership is reflected in the prestigious publications it produces, citing the cultural impact of magazines such as Al-Arabi and Alam Al-Ma’rifa, which have played a key role in shaping Arab cultural identity.

Al-Muharib emphasized Kuwait University’s contribution to spreading Arab culture, describing it as one of the region’s leading academic institutions. He pointed to the university’s peer-reviewed publications, periodicals, and its welcoming approach to students from neighboring countries, particularly during the early stages of higher education in the region.

Highlighting Kuwait’s selection as the Arab Capital of Culture and Media for 2025, Al-Muharib said the recognition reflects the country’s efforts in enriching Arab culture, strengthening identity, and serving as a cultural beacon.

During his speech at the first annual forum of Arab cultural attachés, he reviewed the role of higher education institutions in supporting joint Arab cultural initiatives and fostering intellectual exchange. He stressed the importance of preserving the traditional values of higher education, including promoting innovation, knowledge, and community service, while balancing modern needs with foundational educational principles.

Al-Muharib concluded that universities must maintain the traditional values that have long guided them, enriching societies and reinforcing cultural identity. The forum, launched by the Arab League, aims to provide a platform for cultural attachés to discuss strategies for enhancing joint Arab cultural action and fostering stronger regional collaboration.
