Kuwait secures 900 MW from GCC Interconnection to support grid during maintenance

The Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy said MEW has finalized an agreement with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Interconnection Authority to import 900 megawatts (MW) into the national grid, starting Monday and continuing for several months.
The move is aimed at securing the country’s electricity needs during the current period, reports Al-Rai daily.
The sources explained that the ministry will purchase 600 MW daily from the UAE and 300 MW from the Sultanate of Oman. This supply will offset the reduction in production caused by scheduled maintenance of several units, which is set to begin mid-month as part of preparations for the upcoming summer season.
The officials highlighted that purchasing electricity at this stage — while maximum temperatures are gradually declining and schools prepare to reopen — will provide flexibility for maintenance teams to carry out work with precision, ensuring the safety and efficiency of power plants during operation.
They emphasized that the ministry’s leadership is committed to maintaining an uninterrupted supply of electricity and water, under a broader vision to balance production and consumption while meeting the country’s growing demand.
