Kuwait remains Japan’s fourth largest oil supplier despite 22 pc drop in May

Kuwaiti crude oil exports to Japan dipped 22.2% in May 2025 compared to the same period last year, falling to 4.23 million barrels, or an average of 137,000 barrels per day, according to preliminary data released by Japan’s Natural Resources and Energy Agency. This marks the second consecutive monthly decline in Kuwaiti oil shipments to Japan.

Despite the decrease, Kuwait retained its position as the fourth-largest oil supplier to Japan, accounting for 7.5% of Japan’s total crude imports in May. This share is lower than the 8.3% recorded in May 2024, signaling a slight erosion of market share amid increased competition.

The report also revealed that Japan’s total crude oil imports rose by 13.9% year-on-year to reach 2.4 million barrels per day, marking the first increase in two months. This uptick suggests a rebound in demand or inventory adjustments by Japanese refiners.

The Middle East continued to dominate Japan’s oil supply, providing 90.5% of total crude imports in May. However, this represents a 4.8% drop from the same month last year, indicating some diversification in Japan’s sourcing strategy.

Meanwhile, the price of Kuwaiti crude oil was reported at $69.23 per barrel, reflecting current market dynamics amid ongoing geopolitical and economic uncertainties affecting global oil prices.

In related developments, the Kuwait Oil Company reportedly saw the cancellation and rejection of two tenders, further highlighting operational and procurement challenges in the sector.
