Kuwait rejects UN reports for failing to clearly condemn Iranian attacks

. . . urges stronger international condemnation of Iran at UN Human Rights Council; criticizes ‘retaliatory strike’ label in UN reports on Iranian aggression

Kuwait on Monday strongly rejected what it described as the lack of a clear condemnation of Iranian aggression and attacks on civilians in reports presented before the United Nations Human Rights Council.

The reports, issued by the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran and the International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran, referred to the Iranian attacks as “retaliatory strikes.” Kuwait said this description could risk legitimizing unlawful actions and undermining accountability.

Kuwait’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva, Nasser Al-Hayen, raised the country’s concerns during a joint interactive dialogue at the Council’s 61st session.

Al-Hayen stressed that portraying the attacks as retaliatory may inadvertently justify Iran’s aggression against Kuwait and other countries in the region. He called for a firm and unequivocal condemnation of such actions.

He further warned that any threat or act of aggression targeting a country in the region undermines collective security, represents a dangerous escalation, and violates international law.

He also pointed out that the United Nations Security Council adopted Resolution 2817, which affirms the seriousness of Iran’s actions.
