Kuwait reaffirms commitment to UN Charter, multilateral cooperation on 80th UN anniversary

Foreign Minister Abdullah Al-Yahya reaffirmed Kuwait’s unwavering commitment to the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter, describing it as “the solid foundation of an international order based on justice, peace, and cooperation.”
Speaking at the United Nations Day celebration held by the UN Mission in Kuwait to mark the 80th anniversary of the Charter’s declaration, Al-Yahya praised the UN for continuing, eight decades on, to fulfill its noble mission of promoting peace and development as a unifying platform for nations and peoples to confront global challenges.
The ceremony, held under the theme “Building Our Future Together” and under the patronage and attendance of the Minister, brought together senior officials and heads of accredited diplomatic missions in Kuwait.
Al-Yahya said this year’s theme reflects “the spirit of solidarity and shared responsibility” and represents both the aspiration for a secure and prosperous future and a call to strengthen international multilateral cooperation, ensuring future generations inherit a peaceful world where development flourishes and human dignity is upheld.
He highlighted that since joining the United Nations in 1963, Kuwait has consistently worked to enhance cooperation within the UN system by supporting its programs, funds, and specialized agencies, in line with the country’s firm commitment to the UN’s three pillars – maintaining international peace and security; advancing sustainable development goals and protecting human rights.
Al-Yahya also pointed out that Kuwait’s hosting of the United Nations House, which accommodates more than 20 UN agencies, organizations, and programs, stands as a milestone in the strong partnership between Kuwait and the UN. He emphasized that this reflects Kuwait’s steadfast support for the UN’s humanitarian, developmental, and diplomatic missions.
For her part, Ghada Al-Taher, the UN Resident Coordinator and Representative of the Secretary-General to Kuwait, commended Kuwait as “a solid model of multilateral partnership and global humanitarian cooperation.”
Al-Taher noted that this year’s celebration carries special significance as it coincides with the UN’s 80th anniversary and comes at a time when the world faces unprecedented challenges—including conflicts, humanitarian and economic crises, and climate change—making international solidarity more vital than ever.
She praised Kuwait’s ongoing contributions under the wise leadership of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshaal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, noting their unwavering support for UN efforts in peacebuilding, human rights, development, and humanitarian relief.
Al-Taher further highlighted the expanding cooperation between Kuwait and the United Nations in health, environment, youth and women’s empowerment, anti-corruption, and anti-human trafficking initiatives, underscoring continued joint efforts to achieve both Kuwait Vision 2035 and the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
