Kuwait reaffirms commitment to nuclear disarmament as core principle of NPT
Enezi expresses concern over lack of tangible progress on disarmament more than five decades after the treaty entered into force. He urged the international community to take immediate and effective steps to advance this critical agenda

The State of Kuwait has reiterated that nuclear disarmament remains the ultimate objective and foundational principle of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), emphasizing that it constitutes the first and essential pillar for achieving international peace and security, as well as for preserving the credibility of the treaty itself.
Delivering Kuwait’s statement at the Third Preparatory Committee for the 2026 NPT Review Conference, held at the United Nations headquarters, Bandar Al-Enezi, Diplomatic Attaché of Kuwait’s Permanent Mission to the UN, expressed concern over the lack of tangible progress on disarmament more than five decades after the treaty entered into force. He urged the international community to take immediate and effective action to advance this critical agenda, reports Al-Rai daily.
Al-Enezi criticized the ongoing reliance on nuclear deterrence policies and the continued modernization of nuclear arsenals, warning that such practices have fueled a renewed arms race and heightened global and regional tensions. He underscored that these developments are in clear violation of the legal obligations of nuclear-weapon states under Article VI of the treaty.
He emphasized that the complete, verifiable, and irreversible elimination of nuclear weapons remains the only absolute guarantee against their future use. Al-Enezi also called on all states, particularly nuclear-armed nations, to honor their disarmament commitments and the outcomes of previous NPT review conferences.
Kuwait reaffirmed its support for international efforts to criminalize the use of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction, stressing that their use constitutes a grave breach of international humanitarian law.
Highlighting Kuwait’s long-standing commitment to global disarmament and non-proliferation frameworks, Al-Enezi noted that the country continues to fully implement the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement and the Additional Protocol, in alignment with its adherence to the international legal order.
He further conveyed Kuwait’s readiness to actively cooperate with the international community to promote meaningful progress on disarmament.
In conclusion, Al-Enezi expressed Kuwait’s hope that the preparatory committee’s work would contribute to concrete outcomes that advance the disarmament pillar of the treaty and lead to the adoption of a robust and forward-looking final document at the 2026 Review Conference—paving the way for a world free of nuclear weapons.
