Kuwait Oil Company surpasses 90,000 barrels per day in heavy oil milestone

The achievement is a historic accomplishment, accomplished despite significant challenges in developing complex heavy oil fields and shortages in steam injection resources and drilling equipment.

Kuwait Oil Company expects to reach a production level of 100,000 barrels per day by the second quarter of 2025.

The recent organizational transformation, which streamlined the mechanisms of the KOC, provided greater flexibility to the departments involved in the project, enabling them to adapt, excel, and achieve results in record time.

 

The Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) announced that its heavy oil production has reached 90,000 barrels per day.

Issa Al-Maragi, Executive Vice President of North and West Kuwait, stated that this milestone is a historic achievement for the company, noting that it was accomplished despite significant challenges in developing and operating complex heavy oil fields, as well as shortages in steam injection resources and drilling and maintenance towers, according to Al Rai newspaper.

Al-Maragi stated that the efforts of the teams and groups within the company accelerated the completion of major projects in the Ratqa field in northern Kuwait. He also noted that the recent organizational transformation, which streamlined company mechanisms, provided greater flexibility to the departments involved in the project, enabling them to adapt, excel, and achieve results in record time.

He praised the joint cooperation between Kuwait Oil and Shell International on the heavy oil project, highlighting the developed technical services agreement, which adopted best practices and implemented innovative initiatives to optimize steam usage. These efforts helped overcome the challenges posed by steam shortages, enabling Kuwait Oil to surpass its production targets.

Al-Maragi explained that these initiatives included the development of an automated tool to optimize steam allocation, the use of quaternary reverse osmosis water, comprehensive evaluations of design performance, improved extraction efficiency, the promotion of an integrated energy balance model, and continuous monitoring to enhance well performance.

He expressed the pride of the company’s senior management in everyone who contributed to this achievement, especially as it coincides with the company’s 90th anniversary, making it a double milestone.

He stressed that efforts will continue to enhance heavy oil production, revealing that the company expects to reach a production level of 100,000 barrels per day by the second quarter of 2025.
