Kuwait nears completion of key overhead power lines linking Gulf Power Grid

The Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy is on track to complete the two overhead transmission lines linking the Wafra Gulf Interconnection Station to Sabah Al-Ahmad Stations 3Z and 4Z before the end of the year.

According to informed sources, work on the project—implemented by the contractor of the General Authority for Gulf Interconnection—has reached 70 to 80 percent completion, reports Al-Rai daily.

Once operational, the project will enhance Kuwait’s ability to import up to 2,500 megawatts from the Gulf grid, depending on surplus availability among Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states.

The move is expected to significantly bolster electricity supply during peak summer demand.

Last month, the Gulf Interconnection Authority inaugurated the Al Wafra station—the largest expansion project in the Gulf Interconnection Network.

The event was attended by a high-level Kuwaiti delegation, including Assistant Undersecretary for the Electricity Transmission Networks Sector Faisal Al-Sumait, representatives from the Development Fund, and officials from the Joint Operations Company.

The new station features cutting-edge monitoring, analysis, and fault-prediction systems, along with advanced cybersecurity protections.

In parallel, the Central Agency for Public Tenders has approved awarding the first-phase maintenance contract for the Doha Reverse Osmosis Seawater Desalination Plant—and its alkalinity enhancement equipment—to the second-lowest compliant bidder after the lowest offer was disqualified for technical reasons.

The plant plays a vital role in Kuwait’s potable water security and will undergo modernization to improve efficiency, ensure reliability, and adopt environmentally friendly desalination technologies in line with sustainable development goals.
