Kuwait mural fetes half-century of diplomatic ties with Australia

Kuwait’s National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters (NCCAL) unveiled on Wednesday a mural commemorating some 50 years since diplomatic relations with Australia began in earnest, hailing the artwork as a significant cultural initiative.

The artwork, a collaboration between famed Australian muralist Sophi Odling and Kuwaiti artist Sheikha Al-Abaidli, aims to provide a platform for the local arts scene to flourish, said NCCAL chief Dr. Mohammad Al-Jassar, highlighting such “cultural exchanges” as part of a broader national program.

The artwork encapsulates the upward trajectory in relations between Kuwait and Australia, in addition to depicting the vibrant art scenes in both nations that have grown in significance, said Australian ambassador to Kuwait Melissa Kelly.

The mural, situated at the entrance of Kuwait’s Al-Mubarakiya heritage market, is an effort to “celebrate” Kuwaiti and Australian culture alike, according to NCAAL’s acting chief for antiquities and museums Mohammad bin Ridha, saying such artworks help add color and flair to streets nationwide.

Kuwait and Australia are marking this year the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, while trade and investment ties have seen major headway in recent years as shown in a myriad of activities the Australian embassy has organized to bring light to the matter.
