Kuwait Municipality, Finance Ministry sign contract for waste-to-fuel project

Today, the Kuwait Municipality and the State Property Administration of the Ministry of Finance will conclude a contract for a pioneering project to convert municipal solid waste into dry fuel.

This innovative initiative aims to supply fuel for kilns in cement production factories affiliated to the Kuwait Cement Company. The signing ceremony will be attended by Dr. Noura Al-Mashaan, Minister of Public Works and Minister of State for Municipal Affairs, alongside the Municipality’s Director General, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Finance, and other key officials, reports Al-Rai daily.

The contract spans 20 years from the date of signing and seeks to alleviate environmental burdens by reducing waste, conserving natural resources, and reclaiming large tracts of land currently used for waste disposal. By harnessing waste for energy production, the project not only mitigates environmental impacts but also provides alternative energy sources while minimizing the volume of waste destined for landfills.

Expected to treat approximately 20 percent of the state’s municipal solid waste, the project promises significant environmental, economic, and social benefits. It will optimize resource utilization and enhance public welfare, all while operating at peak efficiency and adaptability. Moreover, the initiative will extend the lifespan of the Abdullah Port landfill, obviating the need for additional landfill sites to accommodate escalating waste quantities.
