Kuwait launches oil lake cleanup with Chinese support

Kuwait has begun a major environmental remediation project as the first unit of an oil lake crude recovery system, developed by China’s Jereh Group, successfully completed its trial run.

The initiative, part of the Kuwait Environmental Remediation Program (KERP), aims to treat massive oil pollution left after the 1990-1991 Gulf War, when about 700 oil wells were set ablaze, forming vast oil lakes.

Jereh Group is providing integrated solutions and advanced equipment valued at nearly 100 million yuan ($14 million), significantly improving crude recovery and paving the way for soil restoration and re-vegetation.

The Chinese diplomats praised the project as a milestone in environmental governance and pledged deeper collaboration with Kuwait on sustainability, energy transition, and ecological restoration.
