Kuwait kicks off ICC CWC challenge League A campaign with 22-run win over Qatar

Bhavsar was named Player of the Match

Kuwait started their ICC CWC Challenge League A 2024-26 campaign in style, clinching a 22-run victory over Qatar, built on Meet Bhavsar’s scintillating century, Ali Zaheer’s near-ton, and a lethal spell from Shafeeq supported by the bowling unit.

After winning the toss, captain Mohamed Aslam chose to bat first. Kuwait lost Clinto early but regrouped through contributions from Meet Bhavsar and Ravija Sandaruwan. Amin looked solid but was run out against the run of play.

The innings’ turning point was the brilliant 181-run partnership between Bhavsar and Ali Zaheer. Ali looked set for a hundred before falling just short on 99 (7 fours, 3 sixes), while Bhavsar anchored the innings with a magnificent 129 off 140 balls (9 fours, 2 sixes). Kuwait closed on a strong 299/7 in 50 overs.

Qatar’s chase was dented early as Yasin Patel struck with the new ball and Shafeeq bowled a fiery spell including a maiden, keeping runs in check. Imal and Tanveer briefly steadied the innings before wickets in the middle overs applied pressure.

A counter-attacking 95-run stand between Asim and Tanveer threatened to tilt the game, but Anudeep removed the dangerous Asim for 94, a breakthrough that swung momentum Kuwait’s way.

Kuwait’s bowlers then finished the job clinically. Shafeeq led the attack with 3/47 in 10 overs with 2 maidens, Anudeep bagged 2/52, while Yasin Patel (1/49 with a maiden), Shiraz (1 wicket), and Shareeq with his tight middle overs ensured Qatar fell short by 22 runs.

For his outstanding knock, Meet Bhavsar was named Player of the Match.
