Kuwait Joins Vietnam in mourning former President Tran Duc Luong
Embassy opens condolence book honoring late leader H.E. Mr. Tran Duc Luong legacy in diplomacy and national development

On May 25-26, 2025, Embassy of Viet Nam in Kuwait opened a condolence book for former Politburo member and President Tran Duc Luong under the presence of all staff of the Embassy and his family.
Writing in the condolence book, Ambassador Duc Thang Nguyen expressed his respect to the former president, who made many contributions to the country’s renovation, especially in expanding foreign relations and international integration of our country.
Representing His Highness Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah – Amir of the State of Kuwait, Kuwait’s Minister of State for Amiri Diwan Affairs, Sheikh Mohammad Al-Abdullah Al-Sabah came and signed the condolence book. Ambassadors of many countries also sent their condolences to the Vietnamese Embassy during the condolence book opening.
Comrade Tran Duc Luong was born on May 5, 1937, native of Pho Khanh commune, Duc Pho district (now Duc Pho town), Quang Ngai province, permanent residence at 298 Van Phuc street, Lieu Giai ward, Ba Dinh district, Ha Noi. He joined the revolution in February 1955 and was admitted to the Communist Party of Viet Nam on December 19, 1959.
The career of H.E. Mr. Tran Duc Luong
February 1955 – September 1955: Relocated to the North, and attended a basic geological technical course under the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
October 1955 – August 1959: Worked as a technical staff member in geological exploration teams, and attended an 8-month supplementary intermediate geology course.
September 1959 – March 1964: Leader of Geological Unit No. 4, and Geological Group No. 20, Youth Union Secretary of the Unit, Executive Member of the Youth Union of the Geological Department, member of the Party Cell Committee.
April 1964 – August 1966: Deputy Technical Head of Geological Group No. 20; Secretary of the Party Cell and Member of the joint Party Cell Committee.
September 1966 – January 1970: Student and Class Monitor of the specialized exploration class (K11) at the Hanoi University of Mining and Geology, Member of the University Party Committee; Secretary of the University Youth Union (1969).
February 1970 – August 1975: Deputy Director of the Geological Mapping Department, Member of the Party Committee, Standing Member of the Party Committee of the Department.
September 1975 – September 1977: Attended the Central Nguyen Ai Quoc School, Secretary of the Class Party Cell.
August 1977 – July 1979: Deputy Head, then Acting Head of the Geological Mapping Federation, General Department of Geology, Party Secretary of the Federation, Executive Member of the Trade Union of the General Department of Geology, Executive Member of the Viet Nam General Confederation of Labor.
August 1979 – January 1987: Director General of the General Department of Geology, Secretary of the Party Caucus of the General Department, attended a 4-monthcourse on economic management at the Soviet Academy of National Economy (1981). National Assembly Deputy in the 7th term, Vice Chairman, then Chairman of the Committee for Science and Technology of the National Assembly, Vice Chairman of the Central Viet Nam–Soviet Friendship Association.
March 1982: Elected as Alternate Member of the Party Central Committee at the 5th National Party Congress.
December 1986: Elected as Member of the Party Central Committee at the 6th National Party Congress.
February 1987 – August 1992: Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers, National Assembly Deputy in the 8th term, Viet Nam’s Permanent Representative to the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (SEV).
June 1991: Re-elected as Member of the Party Central Committee at the 7th National Party Congress.
September 1992 – August 1997: Deputy Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam.
June 1996: Elected as Member of the Politburo by the Party Central Committee at the 8th National PartyCongress.
September 1997 – June 2006: President of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, Chairman of the National Defense and Security Council (from September 1997), and Standing Member of the Politburo (January 1998).
April 2001: Re-elected as Member of the Party Central Committee and the Politburo at the 9th National Party Congress.
He was a Member of the Party Central Committee in the 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th terms, Member of thePolitburo in the 8th and 9th terms, Standing Member of the Politburo in the 8th term, Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers from February 1987 to August 1992, Deputy Prime Minister from September 1992 to August 1997, President of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam from and Chairman of the National Defense and Security Council in the 10th and 11th terms from September 1997 to June 2006, and Deputy of the National Assembly Deputy in the 7th, 8th, 10th and 11thterms.
He was granted retirement by the Party and the State in accordance with regulations as of January 1, 2008.
In recognition of his exceptionally outstanding merits and contributions to the revolutionary cause of the Party and nation, he was awarded the Gold Star Order, the 65-year Party Membership Badge, and numerous other prestigious orders, medals, commendations, and honorary titles from both Viet Nam and abroad.
